The State Pension

The UK State Pension is a regular payment from the government when you reach State Pension age. How much you get depends on your National Insurance record.

The full new State Pension is currently ยฃ221.20 per week (2024/25). You typically need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions to receive the full amount, and at least 10 qualifying years to receive any State Pension at all.

State Pension age

The State Pension age is currently 66 for both men and women. It is rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028, with further increases planned to 68 in future decades.

Deferring your State Pension

You don't have to claim your State Pension as soon as you reach State Pension age. Delaying it can increase the weekly amount you eventually receive โ€” by roughly 1% for every 9 weeks you defer.
